Halloween is a major outdoor social celebration, where neighbors and friends gather together, in driveways and streets chatting or roasting hotdogs and marshmallows around glowing fires, with buckets of candy to pass to eager children dressed as witches, ghouls and ghosts.

With it comes the pleasantries of bright sunny days and cool nights - a welcome change from the brutal heat of summer, where only the "die hards" and resilient kids, playing with red flushed cheeks, can be seen outside.

Since our neighborhood is more remote and the kids have to walk 4 x's the normal distance to say "trick or treat" we gravitate to the party at The Rogers', where ward members, neighbor and all are welcome.

Kenzly went around the neighborhood with Stephanie (obviously unable to separate from her better half - Thing 2).  Kimberly stayed with Karsten who was by the fire, roasting Hot Dogs and marshmallows and visited (Willis', Mortensen's, Spear's, Chastity, and others coming and going), while Kent took Kierra and Kimball around.

Kent was ready to leave far before the kids, but after Karsten caught his marshmallows on fire and then flung it onto the shirt of the little boy roasting beside him, we quickly left (after the flames were extinguished of coarse!).

Another year of costumes, food and fun is over.
Christmas is coming...

Back To School

After six weeks of summer we are starting back to school again.  Watching your kids grow a little more each school year, is always a bitter-sweet moment that tugs at the heart strings, this year especially, as Kenzly is starting High School!
Kimball is looking (and feeling) very cool in his new clothes and sunglasses (which he picked out himself - a new thing for him to show a "fashion" interest).
Kierra is transitioning from sweet 1st grader to a 2nd Grader who thinks she knows what's going on in the world. When it comes to fashion, she really does know what's going on!  She picked out some adorable "hip" clothes for school.
Karsten in another 3 weeks will be starting Pre-School - that is IF he decides to be a "big boy" and graduate out of diapers.  The clock is ticking!

THE BUS!
Kenzly going to Freshman orientation day the Friday before school starts and her first time riding the bus!  Since she has zero hour, she will only ride the bus home, which she isn't thrilled about.  Go figure, when she first started school as a Kindergartener, she was disappointed she couldn't ride the bus because we lived behind the school and since then, have always lived within walking distance. Now that she's finally on a bus route, she's complaining loudly!

First Day of School - July 23rd

Kenzly's first day as a Freshman at Basha High - Go Bears!

All Seminary Students are required to take a zero hour class in order to have enough credits to graduate.   Zero hour starts at 6:30 am! The days of sleeping in until 8 am (or later)
are now over and the hour is 5 am!
Luckily, Rigdon & Kolton Hassell (our ward neighbors one street away) are willing to pick her up and take her to school.  Kenzly doesn't even mind being the only girl with four other boys in the car :)

Kenzly almost 14 and growing up fast!

First Day of Preschool for Karsten!
The day the older kids started school, we started potty training officially.  Karsten and I made a Thomas the Tank Engine potty chart, put on underwear, and went to the store for stickers and incentive toys.  It all went great for the first few hours, until the last stop at the Post Office where we had to stand in line for about 10 minutes.  Just as I was almost finished paying, I looked around the room for Karsten and found he was no where in sight.  A woman coming into the post office must have recognized the panicked look on my face and asked if I had a small boy.  After telling her yes, she told me he was in the car with the keys.  Without my knowing, he'd gotten the keys and crossed the busy parking lot all by himself.  When I got to the car he was inside and had peed all over the floor!  Despite the setback, we continued to try for the next three weeks.  The day before Preschool was to start, I considered just giving up and trying to find another school where he could go in diapers.  But, we went to the orientation and decided to send him to school today in a pull up!  (Since then, he has been doing better and hasn't had any accidents at preschool at least, but he has no problem walking around the house in wet pants.)! All too soon he will be grown up and I will look back and laugh at the day my struggle was so small in comparison :)

Since this isn't Kindergarten I'm really excited to have him go to school twice a week from 9-11:30.  But, I'll be really sad when he's gone all day.  Luckily we still have three years!

The Nutcracker - Christmas girls' tradition with the Riggs

Thanks to Jacinta's planning, we managed to squeeze in a performance of The Nutcracker in downtown Phoenix - something we started last year and hoped to continue as a girls' Christmas Tradition.   Between choir, Christmas, the Sand Dunes and Kimberly's string of December sicknesses, the Ballet was not seeming possible.  But, alas, this Thursday evening came about.  The performance was great and we had nice evening together!

Where's Karsten?

Kent was on a week-long trip to Slovakia for work.  Knowing it was my weekend to teach Relief Society and knowing Saturday was a busy day, I attempted to work on this lesson so I could spend Saturday evening with Kent.

With computer, paper & pen, and the lesson material in front of me, for 10 minutes I sat at the kitchen counter really focusing on accomplishing this task. Karsten was in the adjoining family room playing with his trains on the floor, or so I thought!  When I looked over this is what I saw and was SHOCKED!  He had silently unzipped the couch cushions and was having a great time pulling out the stuffing.  I didn't even know their were zippers on the bottom and what kid figures this would be great fun?

The scripture that comes to my mind about a million times a day, found in 2 Nephi 2:11 reads: "For it must needs be, that there is an opposition in all things", must be true even in preparing Relief Society lessons.

It seems logical that when you are trying to do the "right" thing, it would naturally be easier.  But, now I understand that in all reality, it must be harder!

Recently in the adult meeting of Stake Conference our Stake President's wife talked about the blessings of Motherhood.  She said "motherhood is the greatest refinement, helping to polish our rough edges, teaches us unconditional love and sacrifice, and teaches us to be the best we can be".  She also said "you HAVE to have a sense of humor or you're NOT going to make it"! Obviously I have more "rough edges" and am in greater need of polishing and refining, so I was given Karsten.

Some days I really don't think I'm going to make it!

Lucky

The kids and LUCKY

Hmm...that's my favorite purple jacket, not ready to share just yet!
Lucky decided to join Karsten for a bath
It took a while to clean kids, dog, then sterilize toys, bath and bathroom!!

If he weren't so cute....! Ahhh!!

We always talked about letting our kids have pet rocks, but never REAL PETS! They are too much work, make the house dirty & smelly, and it's just one more thing to take care of - not to mention when you go on vacation (it's bad enough to have potted flowers or new plants and needing to find someone to take care of them!).

A few years ago we broke tradition and got two Holland Lop-eared rabbits.  They were cute and the kids definitely had fun with them, but they were OUT-DOOR PETS.  When we moved to Arizona, "Lilla" and "Chocolate" had to stay behind in the cooler climate of Utah.

Three years later here we are again....introducing LUCKY (to be alive), rescued from I-10 in Phoenix by a co-worker of Kent's.  He needed a home and so I agreed to give it a try.  Can't say I love the wet (or dry) dog smell or "puppy breath".  But, for now I'm trying to keep an open mind...  By the way, he's NOT potty trained...and neither is Karsten!!!

December 2012

Happy 3rd Birthday Karsten!
You are growing up so fast.  Always doing something....
usually mischievous. Maybe you will grow out of the
"terrible two's" now?
One can only HOPE!
Regardless...you keep mom's days filled with laughter
(and tears) and we love you!

A special birthday breakfast -
Danish Ebelskievers (round balls as the kids say).

And he's off..
